«I doubt whether there is any surprise in the world more shocking than the first time you taste ice cream.” So said American journalist Heywood Campbell Broun. And tasting the artisanal gelato at Il Mondo del Rossi – in Radicofani and Bagni San Filippo – is almost like tasting it for the very first time, thanks to the way flavors reveal themselves on the palate and the rare ability to bring out the true and original taste of fruit. We spoke with the two directly involved, Leonardo and Martin.
We are in the main square of Radicofani, bustling with tourists and visitors in summer and autumn:
“There are two of us, and two are our shops—one in Radicofani and one in Bagni San Filippo, in the province of Siena. People tell us this gelato exceeds every expectation, both in flavor and quality, and that makes us very happy. We select the best fruit on the market, using only juice and pulp.” And as the writer can confirm, it’s true.
Let’s talk about flavors: “They are obtained by extracting the core of the fruit and, through a delicate balance of measures and counterbalances—using only fruit and water—we arrive at gelato that is super pure. Making good gelato is not easy: you must be precise down to the gram.” And so, here are the variants – over 40: Pistachio, Mascarpone with orange zest and rum, Sicilian Cassata, the Rossi (white chocolate, raspberries, and biscuit), Salted Pistachio, Hazelnut, Fior di Latte, Prosecco Sorbet, plus fruit flavors that follow the seasons…
“Our priority is to preserve the organoleptic qualities of each ingredient, focusing on flavor and goodness without adding anything else. The value of gelato comes from the raw materials. We make no compromises—we select only excellence.”
Gelato, but not only: they also serve aperitifs, milkshakes, crêpes, fruit juices, hot chocolate, iced coffee, and in the evenings, aperitives with outdoor tables on the piazza—combining taste with timeless beauty.
“Gelato is happiness and energy,” say Leonardo and Martin, “a shared experience that becomes part of the town’s daily life, a reference point and a bond between generations.”
The gelateria itself is stylish, enhanced by photos of iconic figures from the past. And it all began by chance, born of a friendship:
“It takes commitment and passion, but working in harmony makes everything easier and more enjoyable.”
Alongside the many cones and cups—the pistachio crumble topping comes highly recommended—there are also practical takeaway boxes to elevate an evening with family, a partner, or friends.
“Gelato has no schedule,” concludes Leonardo. “When it isn’t there, you don’t think about it—but when there’s a gelateria in town, it becomes an essential stop. Gelato culture unites generations and creates friendship.”
In short, your next stop: Radicofani and Bagni San Filippo.
