We are in the heart of the Upper Tiber Valley, where the hills seem to breathe the memory of past centuries. Here stands the Castello di Sorci, a place that does not limit itself to telling history: it lives it, transmits it, renews it every day. Walking through its corridors, among frescoes that capture the light and stones that have seen generations pass by, you have that rare feeling of entering a story that is still in progress. Guiding us on this journey is Veronica Barelli who, together with her brother Alessandro, guards and animates this ancient residence.

Valley Life: Can you tell us something about the history of the castle and its character today?

Veronica Barelli: We are in a castle from the early Middle Ages: the construction dates back to 1104. It is a lively place, full of energy, where cultural and artistic initiatives, guided tours and many private events take place. The castle is not a closed museum: it is lived in daily, with an inn that has been operating year-round for almost 50 years and spaces that host weddings, birthdays, concerts and performances.

Valley Life: And can you tell us more about these beautiful rooms?

Veronica Barelli: The rooms are very versatile. There is the Temple Hall, which we also call ‘auditorium’ for its perfect acoustics: for this reason, it is in great demand for parties and birthdays. Then we have more ‘exclusive’ rooms, decorated with antique furniture and which are used for private events. Among these, I like to dwell on the “Pink Room”. At first glance it might seem covered with a refined wallpaper, but as you get closer you realize that those walls tell a different story: they are a large painting made with the egg technique, an ancient method in which the yolk was used as a binder for pigments. The result is that soft and lasting brightness that we can still admire today.

Valley Life: This Castle is also famous for the beautiful sunsets that can be admired…

Veronica Barelli: Oh yes, the outdoor space of the Castle is really an added value: the pine forest, the ancient walls, the historic well and the internal cloister create natural settings for aperitifs and itinerant buffets. In season, we often start from the dungeons — where historical instruments are also on display — and then go back outside. The sunsets over the Sovara Valley, with colours that change minute by minute, become memorable settings for weddings and parties.

Valley Life: What if guests want to stay and sleep in the Castle?

Veronica Barelli: It happens often, because once you enter the Castle it is not easy to leave quickly… We have five very large and evocative rooms, all with inspiring names. The “Room with a View” dominates the Sovara Valley. It was first Forattini’s room, then Benigni’s when he wrote “Non ci resta che piangere” (We just have to cry), and for this reason it is also called “Forattini’s Room” or “Benigni’s Room”. Then there are the “Red Room”, once linked to the woad trade, the “Loom Room”, the “Armor Room” and the “Annalena’s Room”, also called the “Blue Room”, also painted with the egg technique but with a base of woad leaves. They are ideal rooms to accommodate the bride and groom and their loved ones, offering an exclusive and unforgettable experience.

Valley Life: To what extent can you customize a wedding or party?

Veronica Barelli: The castle lends itself to very different interpretations: from ultra-modern set-ups to historical re-enactments or the most imaginative proposals. We organize tailor-made weddings, themed events, re-enactments with role-playing game associations, services and photo shoots. We also collaborate with the writer Amos Cartabia for guided tours with treasure hunts for children. Everything can be tailored to the needs of the people who come to us.

Valley Life: What is the ideal time to book an event or wedding here?

Veronica Barelli: It depends on the type of event. Weddings are often booked well in advance, while private parties such as eighteenths can be arranged more quickly. The rooms are independent of each other, so it happens to host several parties on the same evening without interference.

For complex projects, however, it is better to contact us in time, especially to agree on catering, set-ups and overnight stays. And, thanks to the Locanda — famous for its croutons and homemade pasta — we can also offer lunches and dinners in the name of the Tuscan tradition.

Valley Life: What changes have you noticed in the type of people who come to you?

Veronica Barelli: In recent years, the Castello di Sorci has become increasingly known abroad. This has led us to welcome guests from many nationalities: Americans fascinated by our history, Russians, Chinese and other oriental communities who often combine different traditions in double ceremonies. This cultural mix enriches the experience and makes each wedding unique. In addition, the ‘Fireplace Room’ and some other rooms have hosted personalities from the world of culture and entertainment, who appreciate the intimacy and atmosphere of the place.

Valley Life: One last thing to tell those who are choosing a location for an event?

Veronica Barelli: The Castle of Sorci is a place that combines history, art, cuisine and organizational skills. If you are looking for a location that can become a scenography, home and stage for your event, here you will find versatility and customization. From historical re-enactment to international weddings, from concerts to private parties, every event can come to life in a context that combines past and present in a natural way.
