Dr. Eraldo Sani, retired dentist, speaks.

VALLEY LIFE: Dr. Sani, how did your career begin and what do you remember about the years of activity in the practice?
ERALDO SANI: “I started my profession in 1982, at a time when dentistry was still a rather neglected branch of medicine. Especially in small provincial companies, dental treatments were often handled with approximation by dental technicians, which made things even more difficult. Over the course of my career, I have witnessed an incredible evolution of the profession. Today, the various branches of dentistry have developed and enriched, leading to a super specialization in different sectors such as conservative, endodontics, implantology and prosthetics, just to name a few. In 1987 I began my first approaches to implantology, facing the difficulties and improvisation of that era. Thinking that today implantology has become the backbone of our business almost makes me smile; at the same time, it has finally enhanced the figure of the dentist, elevating him to the level of a real surgeon”.
V.L.: What emotion did you feel in passing the baton to your son Marco?
E.S.: “Passing the baton to my son Marco was an experience of great significance. Seeing him grow up immersed in the world of dentistry, I always hoped that he could follow a similar path to mine but knowing that he is now realizing this aspiration with skill and passion is truly gratifying. When I saw his enthusiasm for his work, and his determination to improve every day, I felt a mixture of pride and serenity. For me, it’s not just a simple professional handover, but about seeing a dream come true. It is as if I could now observe a part of myself reflected in him, as he builds his path. It is exciting to know that the family tradition continues and that both my children bring with them the values that I have tried to pass on: dedication to the patient, ethics and love for this profession. It is a moment that makes me look to the future with hope, knowing that our legacy will live on through their work.”
V.L.: If you could give one piece of advice to a young dentist starting today, what would it be?
E.S.: “My advice for a young dentist entering this profession today is clear: cultivate your passion and never stop learning. Over the years, I’ve seen the profession evolve and diversify in ways we could only have imagined.
Today, dentistry is increasingly industry-specific, which means it’s crucial to not only find your niche, but also excel in it. Passion is the driving force that sustains us in times of difficulty and inspires us to give our best every day. It’s what makes the job meaningful and rewarding. In addition, specializing in an academic career is the secret to succeeding in the field. Specialist expertise is now more valued than ever, as it allows for greater professionalism. Without forgetting the importance of human relationships. Patients are not just looking for a professional, but someone they can trust and feel comfortable. Therefore, always have a keen eye for the humanity behind every smile you heal. Being a dentist is not just a matter of techniques; it is important to understand the needs of each individual patient”.
V.L.: Now that you are retired, do you still remain involved in the profession, or do you prefer a total detachment?
E.S.: I have dedicated 40 years of my life to this profession, with enormous passion and professionalism. Unfortunately, due to health reasons, I had to leave my job, a gesture that fills me with nostalgia. However, my only consolation is knowing that everything continues thanks to my children. I dedicate my complete support and experience to them, although I can no longer be physically present as I would like.
